CURRICULUM

BALLET TECHNIQUE
The syllabus for the training of a dancer at the School of Cleveland Ballet is based on Classical and Neo-Classical techniques. Ballet technique is one of the most important disciplines in laying the foundation of lightness and suspension.

POINTE
The technique for females executing ballet movements en pointe make possible a highly effective series of moves in which the tip of the foot is used to create the impression of lightness and suspension in the ballerina.

VARIATIONS
Variations are the widely known solo dances from Classical and Contemporary ballet. The study of variations by intermediate and advanced students helps develop memory and stamina as well as stage presence.

BODY ALIGNMENT & CONDITIONING
This system of structured physical exercises controls, molds, strengthens, aligns and stretches the body as an instrument for movement.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE
Includes the elements of classical distortion, counter balance of weight distribution, asymmetrical shapes and design in conjunction with irregular meter and rhythms.

JAZZ
Designed to acquaint the student with principles of technique and conditioning that develop strength, endurance and coordination necessary to move fully and freely in a number of styles.

CHARACTER
Character dance is a specific subdivision of classical dance. It is the stylized representation of a traditional folk or national dance, mostly from European countries, and uses movements and music which have been adapted for the theater. Character dance is integral to much of the classical ballet repertoire. A good example of character dance within ballet is the series of national dances which take place at the beginning of Act II of Swan Lake. The ballet Don Quixote also features many character variations based on traditional Spanish dances. Popular character dance adaptations for ballet also include the national dances of Hungary, Russia, Poland, Italy and Spain.

SPANISH DANCE
Focusing on regional folk dances, escuela bolero, and flamenco, students will learn footwork, castaneting, and palmas techniques and gain an understanding of the rhythm (compas).

SEMINARS & CLINICS
Staff from University Hospital's Sports Medicine Department and Children's Hospital introduces students to dance and health related topics. These will include subjects on sports nutrition and detecting, nurturing and preventing common injuries related to the physical activity of dance and its related arts.

YOUNG MEN'S CLASS
The technique to execute physical strength, power and brilliance of male dancing for Beginner to Intermediate levels. Focusing particularly on jumps, turns and beats.
